NEW DELHI: The ministry of electronic and information technology (Meity) on Tuesday blocked 43
mobile apps
including Alibaba Workbench, AliExpress, Alipay Cashier, CamCard and WeDate, for engaging in activities prejudicial to India's sovereignty, integrity, defence, security and public order.
"Ministry of electronics and information technology has issued the order for blocking the access of these apps by users in India based on the comprehensive reports received from
Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center
, ministry of home affairs," it said in an official statement.
Earlier on June 29, the government had blocked access to 59 Chinese apps, including hugely popular TikTok and UC Browser and on September 2, another 118 apps comprising PUBG Mobile Nordic Map, Livik, PUBG Mobile Lite, WeChat Work, Baidu, Tencent Weiyun among others were banned under section 69A of the Information Technology Act.

The move comes as a setback for Chinese giant Alibaba, which is the biggest investor in fin-tech firm Paytm and also backs online grocer BigBasket. The Chinese tech giant was also forced to put on hold its plans to invest in Indian companies following the border tensions between the two nuclear-armed countries, Reuters previously reported.
